For their first night in Tanzania the Birkenshaws chose to stay
at the popular and convenient DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in
Dar es Salaam.
The hotel is located within walking distance of the city centre
with its restaurants and shops. The group then started their
safari with a short flight to Selous, arriving in time for lunch
followed by an evening game drive.
They stayed 3 nights at Selous Luxury Camp, situated in the
heart of Selous on the Zema River. In addition to game drives
the party enjoyed boat cruises along the quiet waterways
and guided game walks where they saw hippos, buffaloes,
lions and elephants amongst others. Being a keen
photographer, Mr Birkenshaw was really taken aback by the
wildlife, the scenery and its quiet beauty.
Next, the party headed to Ruaha National Park,
approximately a 2-hour flight west from Selous, into the
heart of Tanzania. Ruaha has very few lodges, hence the
possibility of spotting other vehicles is remote, but the
wildlife is amazing and the group were pleased with their
wildlife count including impalas, buffaloes and more lions.
They didn’t have to move far at times as the Ruaha River
Lodge, where they stayed, is situated on a bend in the Great
Ruaha River, with superb views.
In the heart of southern Tanzania is the Ruaha National Park. It has a hot and dry climate with dramatic
scenery plus abundant wildlife and colourful birdlife. Mrs Birkenshaw and her family wanted to fully
immerse themselves in nature with an intimate wilderness experience away from the more frequently
visited parks on the northern circuit.
