Beautiful yet remote, the game parks of southern Tanzania are much less
visited than those on the ‘northern circuit’. This is a dramatic wilderness
which offers an amazing wildlife experience.
The huge parks offer game drives in remote areas, where local expert
guides explore the bush in open-sided vehicles, by foot following animal
trails, or floating quietly along the waterways of the Selous or the Great
Ruaha River.
A good time to visit is in the dry season (June – November) when game
is concentrated around the water sources and easy to spot.
Selous Game Reserve
Said to be the largest game reserve in Africa, the Selous is relatively untouched. It offers some of Tanzania’s best
big game safaris with Africa’s largest buffalo and lion populations, plus wild dogs, giraffes, elephants, hippos,
rhinos and crocodiles. This unspoilt gem allows visitors the chance to see a wild and expansive Africa.
Ruaha National Park
Relatively remote, in the heart of Tanzania, Ruaha is hotter, drier and higher than Selous. The Great Ruaha River
and prolific game are the park’s main features. It is home to prides of lions, elephants, impalas, packs of wild
dogs and colourful birdlife. With few visitors to its limited number of lodges it affords a real wildlife experience.
