Grumeti Game Reserve
The Grumeti Game Reserve or Grumeti controlled area, lies
in the far north west region of the Serengeti along the north-
western border with the Masai Mara. The area is one of a few
‘buffer’ zones created for the purpose of providing wildlife
corridors to facilitate the movement of migrating animals.
There are a few luxury tented camps in the reserve, all with an
emphasis on sustainability and low impact tourism.
Serengeti National
Park.
The National Park borders
with Kenya and the Masai
Mara National Reserve in the
north. The unfenced border gives
a prime position to see the crossing
of over a million wildebeest and many
hundreds of thousands of zebra as they
make their way on the annual migration
from the plains of the Serengeti into the
Masai Mara in search of fresh food. The Mara
River that winds its way through the Masai Mara
into the Serengeti is a popular spot to see the
animals as they risk life to navigate the crocodile
infested waters to reach new pastures. There are a
number of lodges and camps to choose from when
staying in the Serengeti, with some key locations
along the Mara and Grumeti Rivers, close to known
migration crossing points.
See pages 44-45 for important information about Serengeti National
Park and the Great Migration.

None of the Serengeti Ecosystem is fenced so wildlife
roam freely between the national park and the
conservancies. Each area offers a different safari
experience but it is easy to combine many of the
areas in one visit. Many visitors choose to combine a
safari in the Serengeti with the bordering Masai
Mara. Multiple visas are usually required to combine
the two.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area
The Ngorongoro conservation area covers almost 9000
square kilometres and has been designated an
UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Ngorongoro crater
is an extinct volcano and has the largest, unbroken,
caldera in the world. The crater floor is home to a
large number of animals. Although the crater is
thought of as an enclosure, migrating animals do
pass through. The crater has the largest population
of lions in the region. The centre of the crater floor
has a salt lake encouraging large numbers of
flamingoes. The plains and forests
within the crater are home to
the ‘big 5’.
