The Herero people were the original settlers in this area, and they called the place Otjiwarongo, meaning 'place where fat cattle graze'.
Otjiwarongo is the cheetah capital of the world thanks to the efforts of the Cheetah Conservation Fund which is engaged in efforts to save this beautiful cat.
The town has some interesting old German buildings and has a crocodile ranch that is popular with tourists.
