A Family Adventure on the Cheetah Safari in Kenya
At Somak Luxury Travel, we believe every journey should be as unique as the traveller taking it. That’s why our Signature Safaris are carefully designed to offer flexibility, comfort, and unforgettable experiences. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or a family venturing out for the first time, these safaris are tailored to meet your needs.
One of our most popular itineraries is the Cheetah Safari Premium in Kenya. It combines breathtaking landscapes, thrilling wildlife encounters, and cultural immersion. For Matt and Beccy Law, parents to Beth and Oscar who are teenagers, this safari became more than just a holiday, it was a family story they’ll treasure forever.

The Law family’s journey took them across Kenya’s most iconic parks and reserves. Each lodge and camp offered something different, but what stood out most to Matt and Beccy was the warmth of the local staff. Their enthusiasm and helpfulness transformed the trip into something deeply personal.
“It would be easy to talk about the animals, the scenery and so on, they were all amazing of course, but the people really made a difference and elevated the entire experience,” they reflected.
Why Kenya?

Planning a safari for four might sound complicated, but for this family, their challenge was choosing where to go. After researching different destinations, Kenya won their hearts because of the chance to see the Big Five.
Beth was especially excited about giraffes, her favourite animal. She admitted, “I was anxious about the chance of getting eaten, although I needn’t have been worried… we were well looked after.” Oscar, on the other hand, was curious about the lodges and camps, wondering what they would be like.
Thrills on the Game Drives

The Law family on a game drive
From the very first drive the Law family experienced the drama of the wild. Beth recalled the suspense of their first hunt experience, when the vehicle suddenly changed direction without explanation. She loved the mystery of guessing what they might find. Her highlight was seeing a leopard with cubs and a fresh kill in a tree, a rare sight that became a favourite dinner table story.
Oscar was fascinated by the wildebeest and zebra scattering when a lion appeared. For Matt and Beccy, the most unforgettable moment came from a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Masai Mara. Floating above the treetops, they passed a giraffe at eye level, a surreal encounter that left them speechless.
Sharing the Adventure
Every game drive became a family effort. Beth explained, “We all enjoyed trying to spot different animals and took turns in taking photographs.” Oscar agreed, saying they all took turns spotting and capturing moments. Even when branches were mistaken for camouflaged cheetahs, the fun of discovery kept everyone engaged.
Guided by Expertise
Their guide, Mansoor, played a vital role in shaping the experience. His knowledge of the parks, animals, and local culture brought Kenya to life. He explained traditions, history, and even the challenges faced by local communities. Oscar remembered learning how male elephants are pushed out of the herd while females stay together, a detail that really fascinated him.

The Rhythm of Safari Life
The daily routine quickly became a joy. Beth loved waking up early to watch the sunrise, describing it as “always really beautiful.” Matt, an early riser himself, said nothing compares to seeing the savannah bathed in morning light. Evenings around the campfire brought peace and reflection after days filled with adventure.
Beyond the wildlife, the Law family was touched by the atmosphere of Kenya. Beth described the people as “really lovely and like to make sure that you are having a good time.” Matt and Beccy found the vibe chaotic, vibrant, and noisy in a good way, but always welcoming.
Learning Through Travel
Beth enjoyed learning Swahili and is still practising on Duolingo. The family also gained insights into the traditions of local tribes, from greetings and manners to customs and family life. They saw how modern influences blend with traditional values, especially through the spirit of Harambee, meaning “pulling together.”

By the middle of their safari, the family realised that they were not just seeing animals, but they were genuinely connecting with Kenya in a deeper way. The combination of wildlife, culture, and hospitality created a journey that felt complete.
If you’re considering a safari, this is the moment to imagine yourself in their shoes. A Journey That Lingers
The safari left a deep impression on each family member. Beth now appreciates wildlife in every country. Oscar loved seeing animals in their natural habitat rather than in a zoo. And for the parents, the trip rekindled their adventurous spirit, reminding them of their travels before children.
When we asked them what they would do if they could return for just one hour, Beth said she would choose a morning game drive in Samburu or the Masai Mara, Oscar would relive the hot air balloon ride, and Matt and Beccy would go back to the moment they first saw a giraffe or hippo.
