Wildebeest Migration
Map locations are approximate and are not
intended to be definitive. Semi permanent and
mobile camp locations are not shown. In recent
years the timing of the migrations have varied
considerably. For a detailed map of the
Masai Mara see page 41.
Wildebeest Migration
Every year thousands and thousands
of wildebeest and zebras make an
epic journey following a similar path
in search of fresh grazing.
Between December and March the
animals graze on the Serengeti Plains.
Calving takes place in Ndutu during a
few weeks in February and then in
March or April the migration begins.
In June the herds move north, and
around July cross the Mara River and
enter the Masai Mara, where they
reside for the next three or so months.
Once the short rains start in the south,
usually between October and
November, the herds leave the Masai
Mara and return to the Serengeti and
the circle of life begins again.
