Spend 3 nights in Cape Town, one of Mother Nature's most successful achievements.

Breathtaking vistas, delightful vineyards, where a little wine tasting is always a good thing, a plethora of restaurants serving delicious food, superb shopping and a host of other wonderful activities - far too many to list - all await the fortunate visitor to the 'Mother City'.

Then on to Stellenbosch, the second oldest and possibly the most scenically attractive and historically preserved town in South Africa. The next two days are spent in Oudtshoorn which is situated between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountains. Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of world and home to the spectacular Cango Caves.

Travel to Knysna for the next two nights. Knysna is nestled on the banks of a stunning estuary. It is surrounded by forests, lakes and beaches. The town offers craft shops, flea markets and a waterfront with restaurants renowned for their oysters. Then spend one night in the beautiful Swellendam, famed for its architecture and history.

Finally, a night spent in Hermanus, where the magnificent scenic beauty is complemented by modern infrastructure, upmarket shops and a multitude of adventure options. Whale watching, during the season (Jul-Nov) is a never-to-be-forgotten experience.

This 10-night self-drive itinerary takes you to all the interesting, beautiful and exciting places on the Garden Route.

Day 1 Cape Town

On arrival at Cape Town International Airport you will be met by your Somak representative who will assist you with collecting your car. A day at leisure to perhaps explore the 'Mother City'. Why not drive to the foot of Table Mountain and take the Cable Car to the top where you can enjoy the spectacular views across Cape Town? Or visit places of interest such as the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, South Africa Museum, the Malay Quarter and the castle, before driving to your hotel.

Day 2 Cape Town

Today you can choose to join an organised tour, or drive along the coast via Chapman's Peak to the Cape of Good Hope. Then continue along the False Bay coastline to Boulders Beach to see the penguin colony, or visit the naval port of Simon's Town which is situated in False Bay. Finally, you could stop at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens where you can admire the splendour of these diverse gardens.

Day 3 Cape Town

Cape Town is such a diverse city with so much to explore. We suggest you take the ferry to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned. Accompanied by a guide who is an ex-prisoner, learn about Mandela and the life of prisoners on Robben Island.

Day 4 Stellenbosch

After breakfast drive to Stellenbosch, where you can enjoy excellent wine tasting in the heart of the Winelands of the Cape, complimented by warm South African hospitality.

Days 5-6 Oudtshoorn

Travel to the world's ostrich capital, Oudtshoorn. Included in your 2-night stay is 1 bush safari, 1 horseback safari and 1 elephant walk safari. Whilst in Oudtshoorn you can take a tour of an ostrich farm and the fascinating Cango Caves.

Day 7 Knysna

Drive via the Outeniqua Pass to George and on to Knysna. Take the ferry on the lagoon to the Featherbed Nature Reserve (payable locally). After lunch, return to Knysna by ferry and check into your hotel.

Day 8 Knysna

A free day to explore, why not travel via Natures Valley to the Tsitsikamma National Park, visit the Big Tree and Storms River Mouth before returning to Knysna via Plettenberg Bay?

Day 9 Swellendam

After breakfast travel to Swellendam, the third oldest settlement in South Africa. Here you can visit the Drostdy Museum, the Swellendam Art Gallery and the Sulina Fairie Sanctuary, a magical fairy garden.

Day 10 Hermanus

Travel to Hermanus, famous for the whales that come into the bay to calve during the months July-November.

Day 11 Hermanus - Cape Town (depart)

Depart Hermanus and drive along the coast towards Cape Town. Stop for lunch en route and arrive at the airport in the late afternoon to drop off your car and check in for your onward travel arrangement.
