ZANZIBAR
Karibu – welcome to Zanzibar, one of the most beautiful
archipelagos in the Indian Ocean. Over centuries different
cultures have influenced Zanzibar and today a fascinating
experience awaits you in the ‘Spice Islands’.
Zanzibar’s beaches are among the best in the world. At the
northern tip of the island, Nungwi beach is an ideal diving
location and is one of the livelier areas. This laid back beach
town is a popular destination for tourists, and there are plenty of
hotels, bars and restaurants to choose from.
On the east coast you will find charming fishing villages and
locals living a simple life. The beaches here include Matemwe,
Pwani Mchangani, Kiwengwa, Uroa, Bwejuu and Jambiani. The
sea is generally fairly shallow here – at high tide it can cover
the beach and at low tide it almost seems to disappear.
The island is home to unique forest reserves and plantations with
fruit, vegetables, and the intriguing Stone Town, steeped in
history. Zanzibar also boasts several small offshore islands ideal
for day-trips including Changu, Chapwani, Chumbe and Bawe.
With flights to Selous and Ruaha, it is easy to combine a few
days on safari with your beach stay (see pages 72-73). The
Serengeti is also easily reached with flights via Arusha.
