www.somak.co.uk 61 January–March: Southern Serengeti This area, most commonly known as the Ndutu region is witness to the calving season, when the wildebeest calves are born. It is one of the most popular times to visit this region. During these months it is best to choose a camp or lodge in the southern plains of the Serengeti or the Ngorongoro Conversation Area. Towards the end, as the rain recedes, the wildebeest and zebras with their young begin their migratory journey. April–May: Western Serengeti The migration begins as the herds move towards the west. The Western Serengeti stretches as far as Lake Victoria. The migratory wildebeest and zebras are confronted by the crocodile infested Grumeti River. June–July: Serengeti/Masai Mara The herds begin to move further north and often the migration splits with two routes forming, one passing west to Lake Victoria and another passing north through the Northern Lobo area of the Serengeti. The crocodile-infested Mara River is where the action happens when the migratory wildebeest cross in to the Masai Mara in Kenya. Please note a crossing is unpredictable as the timing and duration varies widely each year. August–October: Masai Mara The migration is usually dispersed across the plains of Kenya’s Masai Mara. November–December: Serengeti The wildebeest follow the rain towards the Tanzanian border and disperse on the southern plains of the Serengeti.
