The Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya is perhaps one of the most famous safari spots in Africa, and for good reason: it boasts a diverse range of wildlife and epic scenery. While a visit to the Masai Mara is a must on a Kenya safari, this fabulous country has so much more to offer for tourists craving more than a traditional safari adventure. For those in search of a unique excursion into this beautiful and friendly country, here are our favourite treasures in Kenya for you to explore:

Ride across the African plains

Horse riding across the plains

Journeying on horseback across Kenya’s vast plains is an exhilarating, unforgettable experience. Compared to a regular game drive, travelling on horseback promises a completely different and intimate Kenya safari adventure. The best time to see wildlife on horseback is during the mornings and in the evenings, giving you the chance to get up close and personal with some incredible animals. The variety of landscapes that you’ll ride through is truly beautiful; you’ll make your way through acacia forests and volcanic hills with Mount Kilimanjaro towering above you. For those who want to get in touch with their inner cowboy, there is the opportunity to head out on sleep-out trails where you’ll set up camp in the wilderness before continuing your ride the following day.

Chyulu Hills

Off the beaten track at Chyulu Hills

This mountain range forms a volcanic ridge that is 100 kilometres long, the highest peak of which is 2,188 metres high. The volcanoes are technically active, but have not erupted since 1856 and are currently covered in lush green grass. Black rivers of solidified lava complete the ensemble, providing the perfect habitat for impala and elands. Other animals that can be found in the area include eastern black rhinos, elephants, giraffes and lions – to name a few. The Chyulu Hills are visited by fewer tourists than Kenya’s other national parks, such as the Masai Mara, and are therefore a must see for those looking to step off Kenya’s beaten track.

Giraffe Centre

Up close to these elegant creatures at The Giraffe Centre

Just five kilometres from Nairobi is the Giraffe Centre, a place that was set up to protect the endangered Rothschild giraffe. These tall and elegant animals are only found in the grasslands of East Africa, and the Giraffe Centre has been successful in breeding the giraffes in captivity and introducing several breeding pairs into the wild. At the Centre you can learn more about Rothschild giraffes and even get the chance to feed them from a viewing platform. This is a super excursion either before or after a Kenya safari.

Wonderful Wildebeest

Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara

The annual wildebeest migration is one of Kenya’s most popular treasures for a reason.
