We at Somak Luxury Travel have always strived to give back to the East African community, through charity and conservation. We are committed to continually supporting a number of projects in order to improve education and health services in the community.<\/p>\n
One of these projects is The Mara Rianda Charitable Trust, whose ethos aligns perfectly with that of Somak\u2019s.<\/p>\n
The Mara Rianda Charitable Trust was founded by Richard Long, who, in 2003, travelled to the Masai Mara and visited the Mara Rianda Primary School, where he met head teacher Lawrence Bosire who proudly showed him around. The school had less than 250 pupils and the facilities provided to the pupils were very basic. In some rooms there were four pupils to a desk. All the text books were falling apart but were cherished by those using them.<\/p>\n
Richard asked the head teacher what the school needed. He looked at him, pondered and then said,\u00a0\u201cIf you mean by a miracle we need chalk, white chalk, coloured chalk, pens, pencils, rulers, exercise books \u2026\u2026 \u201c,\u00a0<\/em>and so he went on. His simple request shocked Richard: \u201cChalk would be a miracle\u201d. Richard shared those words with many friends and colleagues and they became a by-line for fund raising to support the school.<\/p>\n Since then Richard has returned at least twice a year to assist the school and local community and in total has visited 39 times!<\/p>\n The Trust has since broadened its reach to include maternity and medical care and more educational projects.<\/p>\n Somak Luxury Travel have committed to supporting the Mara Rianda Charitable Trust and for each package holiday booked to Kenya, we will contribute \u00a320 per person towards the charity and its good causes.<\/p>\n For our first round of fundraising, during the period between 01 Oct 21 to 31 Jan 2022, we were able to raise a grand total of \u00a31640, which we have now donated to The Mara Rianda Charitable Trust.
