Closer than you would ever imagine. It would be the icing on the cake and a welcome change, from a dry and at times dusty safari experience.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing these enormous, but gentle giants in the warm and nutritious plankton rich waters of the Indian Ocean can be as overwhelming as your first encounter with another large animal \u2013 the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/tanzania\/holidays\/best-of-tanganyika-safari\">elephant<\/a><\/span>. The best time to see these nursing mothers and their calves (they normally only give birth to one) is from July until September, with its peak in July and August, before they head off to Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whale species<br \/>\n<\/strong>There are different type of whale species, but the one you\u2019re most likely to spot along the African coast will be the <em>Humpback Whale<\/em> (16m\/52ft\/30 tons). They\u2019re a photographer\u2019s dream as they like to breach (jump out of the water) and rotate their bodies whilst they\u2019re halfway out of the water. A truly awesome sight.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive aligncenter wp-image-11274 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/inspiration\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/humpbackavalon-0614953185.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"532\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/inspiration\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/humpbackavalon-0614953185.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.somak.com\/inspiration\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/humpbackavalon-0614953185-451x300.jpg 451w, https:\/\/www.somak.com\/inspiration\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/humpbackavalon-0614953185-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.somak.com\/inspiration\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/humpbackavalon-0614953185-462x306.jpg 462w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You can usually see them from afar when they\u2019re blowing (forcefully blowing air after a dive) or when they\u2019re fluking (tail straight up out of the water, preparing themselves to dive). Another whale that you may be able to spot would be the <em>Southern Right Whale<\/em> (18m\/60ft\/100 tons). Bigger, but curious and more likely to swim closer to the boat.<\/p>\n<p>You will need to head to <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/sri-lanka\">Sri Lanka<\/a> <\/span>&#8211; another Somak Luxury Travel destination &#8211; to see not only the largest whale, but also the largest animal on the planet \u2013 the <em>Blue Whale<\/em> (30m\/98ft\/170 tons).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Whale watching in Kenya<br \/>\n<\/strong>The relatively unknown small coastal village of <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/KenyaTourism\/videos\/314464033222761\/\">Watamu<\/a><\/span>, is about 15km south of Malindi. Hermanus, which is along the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/south-africa\/holidays\/cape-town,-self-drive-garden-route-with-hermanus-and-eastern-cape\">Garden Route<\/a><\/span>, in particular, is a favourite for southern right whales, but you can also see humpback whales along the Elephant Coast and stay at the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/south-africa\/kwazulu-natal\/ghost-mountain-inn\">Ghost Mountain Inn<\/a><\/span> in the KwaZulu Natal province. Here you can kayak amongst cape fur seals and dolphins or go on a cruise, and you\u2019ll be able to see a variety of whales as well. Stay at the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/namibia\/swakopmund\/hansa-hotel\">Hansa Hotel<\/a> <\/span>in Swakopmund, which is north of Walvis Bay.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/mozambique\">Mozambique<\/a> \u2013 the best time to see humpback whales in the tropical waters of Mozambique is like most destinations in July and August. The mothers and their calves start their migration to the Antarctic in October but can at times still be seen in deeper water until December. The island has many amazing luxury hotels, like the <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/mauritius\/mauritius\/constance-belle-mare-plage\">Constance Belle Mare Plage<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>* <a href=\"https:\/\/www.somak.com\/sri-lanka\">Sri Lanka<\/a> \u2013 The Blue Whales\u00a0 can be seen from November to April.
