Born Free by Joy Adamson, details Joy and her husband’s efforts to raise and rehabilitate lions in Kenya in the mid-20th century, with a particular focus on a lioness called Elsa.<\/p>\n

We love this book as we support The Born Free Foundation, set up by actress Virginia McKenna who starred as Joy in the film Born Free based on the book, and her son Will Travers.<\/p>\n

The Born Free Foundation has also published a children’s version of this book, making it a great introduction for kids if you are planning on taking them on safari for the first time.<\/p>\n

Shantaram, a novel by Gregory David Roberts, is a fantastic read about an Australian bank robber and heroin addict who escaped from Pentridge Prison and fled to India, and who was based mainly in Mumbai.<\/div>\n

The Leopold Cafe in Mumbai is a central location in the book, and we highly recommend adding it to your list when visiting India, as it is steeped in history and serves some fantastic food.<\/div>\n

The riveting autobiography of the iconic South African president, Nelson Mandela. A compelling read, it paints a vivid picture of the extraordinary life of hardship and fortitude lead by Mandela on his quest for freedom in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Nelson Mandela Capture Site<\/p><\/div>\n

When you visit South Africa, we recommend\u00a0\u00a0the Nelson Mandela capture site in Howick.\u00a0The sculpture at the site is a must see which comprises 50 steel columns that are between six and 9.5 metres in height and cover a width of almost 30 metres. These have been cut by laser to form an image of the former president which can be viewed as you walk towards it, representing the long walk to freedom that he took towards his goal of political equality.<\/p>\n
