50th aniversary

Celebrating 50 years – past, present and future

50th aniversary logo Much has changed since Suresh Sofat founded Somak Travel in 1968. The way that we are prompted to organise travel and the method of researching how to achieve what we want from a travel experience has changed with the advancement of technology and all 'things Internet'. Not only has it changed how we communicate with our customers and potential customers but also with our suppliers - indeed very different now to when we first began.

Our founder, now in his 81st year and still very active in the business, has instilled the fundamentals of leadership, innovation and, most important of all, customer care in all of us. Inherently he has always preached that science and technology are engines of prosperity so innovation and progress is something that we continue to aspire to.

Our belief in these fundamentals means that we remain independent and yet still very competitive, resulting in Somak continuing to be the largest leisure travel company to Africa for many years. The Sri Lanka and India programmes, only one and two years old respectively, have, through those very same values, enabled us to grow rapidly, making us one of the leading companies organising leisure travel to those areas as well.

50 years is indeed a great achievement and we have got there through much hard work and huge sacrifices, but above all it has been fun. It is easy and, in fact, tempting, to dwell too much on one's own many successes during the past 50 years but in truth Somak is about the next 50 years.

As we've said earlier, much has changed in the last 50 years and we are certain that the pace of change during the next 50 years will be much greater. We are excited about the next 50 years; we are certain that truly understanding and putting into practice the fundamentals of leadership and innovation will result in excellent customer care and care for the environment.
