Cities & Safari in South Africa
Imagine a night safari in Kruger, South Africa, when thousands of eyes belonging to the Big Five peer through the Kruger bush, beaches of South Africa glinting in the sun, mountains and bustling cities like Cape Town. It's a World in One Country! South Africa is vast, immensely varied and there's no better place to start than the stunning attractions of the Cape. Cape Town, the 'Mother City', has much to offer from historic buildings and a lively Waterfront to the Two Oceans Aquarium and panoramic cablecars revolving through 360 degrees, as they climb to the top of Table Mountain. The views are fabulous and in this delightful setting of mountains and sea, you may not feel any need to move at all whilst in South Africa. Yet not so far away, you could discover the Addo Elephant National Park, follow the Garden Route or explore the deserted beaches of the Wild Coast. Look out for hot springs and caves, the popular resort of Hermanus where sometimes whales come right up to the harbour wall and the pretty Dutch buildings of Stellenbosch nestling at the heart of wine country. On the east coast, the busy port of Durban draws holiday crowds with fine beaches and water sports galore but you can always escape to the Drakensberg Mountains, to ramble or pony trek, or to the Isimangaliso Wetlands Park to view hippos and crocodiles, flamingoes and pelicans. Further north, beyond the dramatic vistas of the River Blyde Canyon, you reach Kruger, the country's most famous safari National Park and one of the world's oldest safari reserves. It is home to nearly 150 species of mammals and over 500 species of birds but everyone comes to see the big five, lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Yet it's good to stop now and then and just gaze at the wilderness where invisible creatures, great and small, stir in the bush. Here too, the saying rings true, 'South Africa, a world in one country'.
