Four Deserts

 

A chance to explore each of the four deserts of Namibia. Green acacias and swaying grass contrast against the red sand of the Kalahari Desert. Camelthorn trees provide shade for a multitude of desert-adapted animals and serve as a sharp silhouette against the setting sun.

The Nama Karoo is a primordial environ isolated by mountain massifs and it is here the second largest canyon on earth divides one of Namibia's most pristine landscapes. Sperrgebeit Desert unfolds in a carpet of flowers and an explosion of bright colours after the winter rains. The Namib Desert is the oldest desert on earth and also home to some of the highest sand dune in the world.

DAY 4 MONDAY KALAHARI DESERT
Travel into the Kalahari Desert where you will embark on a nature drive (260 km). Overnight: Kalahari Anib Lodge, or similar. (b,d)

DAY 5 TUESDAY KALAHARI DESERT
Today you can search for a variety of animals, reptiles and insects that inhabit the desert on a scenic desert walk. Overnight: Kalahari Anib Lodge or similar. (b,d)

DAY 6 WEDNESDAY NAMA KAROO DESERT
Enter the Nama Karoo Desert, home to the world's second largest canyon. On an afternoon drive you can observe the fragile desert ecosystem and the plant life that thrives here (440 km). Overnight: Canon Lodge, or similar. (b,d)

DAY 7 THURSDAY NAMA KAROO DESERT
The daunting Fish River Canyon is your destination today, where you can enjoy the panoramic views. Overnight: Canon Lodge, or similar. (b,d)

DAY 8 FRIDAY SPERRGEBEIT DESERT
Travel to the Sperrgebeit Desert where, after winter rains, the desert transforms into a bright carpet of flowers (300 km). You will explore the sweeping desert plains on a late afternoon nature drive. Overnight: Klein Aus Vista, or similar. (b,d)

DAY 9 SATURDAY SPERRGEBEIT DESERT
Visit a ghost town left to the relentless desert, Diaz Point and the colonial town of Luderitz. Overnight: Klein Aus Vista, or similar. (b,d)

DAY 10 SUNDAY NAMIB DESERT
Travel north to the oldest desert on earth. The early morning fog allows this arid desert to become a life supporting structure for all its living organisms (420 km). Overnight Namib Desert Lodge, or similar. (b,d)

DAY 11 MONDAY NAMIB DESERT
Head to the highest dunes on earth in Sossusvlei and stop at Sesriem Canyon which was gorged out by the Tsauchab River. Overnight Namib Desert Lodge, or similar. (b,d)

DAY 12 TUESDAY WINDHOEK-HEATHROW
Return to Windhoek via the Namib Desert (300 km) where you will be transferred to the airport for your flight via Johannesburg to Heathrow or your chosen extension. (b)
