Chiang Mai

Bustling, historic and colourful, Chiang Mai is the focal point of this massive region and is Thailand's second largest city. The hilltop of Doi Suthep overlooks the city and many more temples are dotted along the side alleys of the old town. In the centre of town is the fascinating night market with a frenetic atmosphere and handicrafts from all over the northern provinces on offer. Easy walks can be undertaken from Chiang Mai, either on foot or on elephant back, to some of the less visited villages in the nearby hills.
