Parc National des Volcans
In the far northwest of Rwanda, the Parc des Volcans, home to the volcanoes, protects the steep slopes of the Virungas, a magnificent mountain range, and is home to the rare mountain gorilla. There is a rich ecosystem, which embraces evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath.
An exhilarating trek through the foothills of the Virungas with experienced trackers offers stirring views in all directions. Then, abruptly, the trail enters the national park, immersing trekkers in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colourful birds and the chattering of the rare golden monkey. The park is also home to the elusive buffalo and elephant. Through gaps in the forest canopy, the magnificent peaks are glimpsed. They are easily accessible and among the highest in Africa.
