This is Egypt's southernmost city and the modern town lies on the east bank of the Nile opposite Elephantine Island. Of particular note is the fact that the Nile is magically beautiful here, so most visitors take the chance to sit and watch feluccas glide by. Superb botanical gardens and fascinating souks complete the picture.
